About CommonWires
CommonWires is a family of local information sources, one for each town it serves. Each one carries its town's name, reads like a hometown paper, and is free.
What it is
An edition, like Cedar Rapids Common, is a daily website and a pair of emails built around one place: what happened in town today, what the weather is doing, how the local teams did, and what there is to do this weekend. Behind every edition is a single newsroom that uses software to gather, write and check, with people setting the rules and reviewing whatever the checks flag. How that works, in detail, is on the Standards page.
What it does
- Reads the town's sources so you don't have to. City hall, the schools, the local newsrooms, the weather service: the day's headlines gathered in one place, with a link to where each item came from.
- Says good morning and good night. The Morning Wire lands early with the day ahead; Power Down closes it out in the evening. Both are free emails, and both are short.
- Watches the weather. A forecast written for the town, hour by hour, plus what is in the sky tonight.
- Follows the home teams. Scores, recaps, previews and a daily sports brief for the college and pro teams the town claims as its own.
- Sets the table. A recipe box, a Sunday meal, and a weekly cooking email.
- Keeps a game going. A daily puzzle built around the town, a crossword, and quizzes on the week's news and sports.
